Tsunami Alert for February 6, 2012 Earthquake causes Mass Hysteria in Cebu

At 11:49 am yesterday, February 6, 2012, Cebu experienced a 6.9 magnitude earthquake from Negros Oriental for several traumatic seconds. This was the strongest earthquake being experienced by the Queen City of the South in recent years. Though there were no critical damages in the city, cracks were visible on some buildings and establishments.

The most scariest part happened around 2:00 p.m. where some fire trucks roam on the city saying there is a "Tsunami alert". Upon hearing, the word Tsunami, it spread all over the city in just minutes like a virus. People on downtown area panicked and rushed heading to Fuente OsmeƱa Circle to be away from the shorelines of Fort San Pedro,Carbon market and areas near the South reclamation Project (SRP).

Students left their schools, employees moved out from their offices, vendors abandoned their stalls and even drivers left their vehicles to run with the panicking crowd. The scene is like on a disaster movie.

Upon seeing the people running away from downtown area, other bystanders and those who are heading to downtown also join the mob not knowing what they are running from. Scared pale faces are visible everywhere and in addition to the scare is that cellular service providers turn off their services in the middle of an emergency. Many were heading on the mountains of Nivel Hills and even invade on mid and high rise buildings and hotels.

Local officials are expecting the casualties to increase in number, but thank God no major damaged and casualties reported in Cebu. However, reports from the Philippine Army showed at least 43 dead on the province of Negros. Philvolcs reported that there will still be aftershocks within the week. Let's just pray that everything will be ok.

  2. Nice post. Thanks for sharing. I hope that preventative measures can be put in place soon. One thing that can be done which costs nothing is each individual take responsibility for their garbage and put it where it belongs instead of throwing it all over the streets, rivers, and everywhere else.
